Nicole Weniger Collaboration
Artist in Residence at Platform Arts Belfast:
"The question of clothing as a "cultural skin" is delicately pursued in many of the works that have been produced by teachers as well as graduates and students of the Angewandte. The Kurdish artist Nilbar Güres, for example, is veiled on a video with the headscarves of all female members of her family. Slowly she takes the colorful layers of her face, assigns each cloth to a family member based on the nature of the knot and the nature of the fabric. Nicole Weniger's photo series The Unknown was created before the wave of refugees, but has been charged with additional meaning: figures packed in rescue foil on a lonely, inhospitable ocean beach convey an almost surrealist way of arriving in the balance between insecurity and search."
